{Ow to the Nth Degree}

One-word Wednesday:

Ow.

No, that's not just a dirty thumbnail.

The pointer finger, on the other hand {ha! Get it? Other hand?} is dirty (dirty with seven hours' worth of spray paint); but the thumbnail is nothin' but a nice dark shade of "ow."

Okay, so I've never been great at one-word Wednesdays. In fact, one-word anything is a challenging concept for me to grasp. I'm a person of many many words. If you were to ask me to describe myself in one word, I'd surely use something double, like absentminded or overrated.

So instead of simply posting a photo and one word about the thumb I smashed with all my might into a piece of wood tonight, I am going to write a list. A list of things that become increasingly difficult without the use of my right-hand thumb. And I will include the same "one word" in each item of my list. One-word Wednesdays, the AoOL way.

1. Using the "space bar." Ow.

1.5. Flossing. No way, José. Ow.

2. Removing my contact lenses. Ow.

3. Writing with a pen. Ow.

4. Gripping. Anything. Ow.

5. Putting my hair into a ponytail. Ow.

6. Wiping (you guessed it). Ow.

7. Zipping zippers. [What is the correct verbage of the word "zipper?" Zipping? Zippering?] Ow.

8. Cracking knuckles. Ow.

9. Pulling ceiling fan chains. Ow.

Photo from here.

10. Thumb wars [though I can never win anyway {something about having rheumatoid arthritis at a young age}]. Ow ow.

Without the use of this thumb, I might as well be a monkey. Or a sloth.

What's hurting you today?

Oh, Camille. Even monkeys have opposable thumbs. No, this brings you more to the level of a raccoon. No wait. Raccoons have those cute little hands. An oppossum. No, now that I think of it, they have little hands too. Ummmm......a potato? Potatoes definitely do not have thumbs.

Hope your hand feels better soon!

OK, and seriously? It took me like a half hour to post that comment because stupid Blogger was down. But that's how dedicated I am.

I brought a candy bowl full of Halloween chocolate into my office today, but I'm the only one eating it. Now I have a stomach ache. Ow.

Hope your finger gets better soon.

HeatherPride--so faithful! I knew when I said that about the monkey, I should have checked my facts. I could only remember that some animals do not have opposable thumbs...not which ones. Thanks for getting that cleared up.

Niki (crum) worthen--so sorry for your pain. My nail hasn't come off yet, but it's just a matter of time. Good thing I never had nice hands to begin with.

Anonymous my sister--it did hurt. You've seen it in person. I know it sounds so babyish, but I use that thumb for a LOT (as made evident in the list above). Thanks for caring.

Katie--Bowlfuls of Halloween candy have been known to have similar effects on me. Kindreds.

amazing how such a small thing can have such a large impact, eh? every time i injure simply ONE finger i am reminded of this. may your healing process be prompt and hurried. which are the same things... so just hurried. whatever.

so... i have these burning questions for you...
1. even though you live in Canada... are you following politics? do you care to? and will you attempt to vote?
2. what does Camille feel towards the holiday of Halloween? does she celebrate it? hate it? is she simply indifferent to it? and has she ever enjoyed it in the past? does she have halloween stories? like scary movies? carving pumpkins? fall colors? have a favorite costume?

gosh... i love your writing. thank God for your blog.

I am sorry, there is nothing worse than a hurt fingure, or toe. Toes are almost worse, because of the whole "walking" thing...but not really.
When do you leave? I hope you stay, but then again, I really do feel bad that you missed your FIRST anniversary with PK. SO, I hope that you get to go home to him soon. I sure hope the lindsey really is thanking you all the time that you sacrificed you FIRST ANNIVERSARY for her.

Pandas don't have thumbs. But, they to have elongated radial sesmoids that they use as thumbs to peel bamboo. Maybe you should look into that.

Gosh, it sounds like you're no stranger to pain with your hurt finger and Oh, Yeah, rheumatoid arthritis!! But as far as minor owees go I say there is nothing worse than a burn. Especially a burn from peeling chili peppers.

Ouch. that's a mega bummer. You never texted me back so I'm assuming you are good to go for the wedding deal. Or that you are writhing in pain and cannot properly use the key pad which is totally understandable.

Sloths use only aerobic metabolism. That's why they move so slowly.

Holly Janeen-- Thank you for your sympathy. It's all I wanted, really.

Kayleen-- That was mean spirited. Why? Why do you act like that? It's because you never liked me, isn't it? Fine, then.

Jami-- Again, thanks for the sympathy. I, too, hope that Lindsey appreciates it, because since hurting my thumb for this cause, I have gone on to feel physical pain in every bone of my body, every joint of my bone, and every atom of my cartilage. All for the wedding. So yes, I hope she appreciates it.

bRAD-- Do you ever wonder why you are the way you are? I do. All the time. Nevertheless, Gus and I really appreciated you showing up and helping tonight. Even though it was for your sister and not for us, we both felt so...thankful. So thanks.

Anonymous-- : ( back atcha!

Anonymous other- Oh, don't worry. I have burns, now, too, on account of hot glue gunning my skin to several mason jars this afternoon. It's no chili peppers, but it still hurts.

Geneva--Thanks for your kind offer last night. I did text you back (too late) at about 11:30 and said I'd been painting away from my phone all night, and I was sorry but I appreciated the offer. Or something. I'm so effing tired, I can't even remember what day it is, let alone what I texted. Anyway, thanks.

(note: I did not read the above comments. I apologize if someone already asked you this.) Do you really have rheumatoid arthritis? If so (or not), could you educate me as to what this is and what it means for your future? I hope that's not too personal a question to ask...

P.S. You don't have to answer on a Thursday post; you could just answer in a comment here if you want.
